U.S. Works With Russian Firm That Supplies Syrian Dictator

… with weapons to go after his own people

The Obama administration is entering into a potential $925 million deal with a Russian defense contractor that has armed the Syrian government against the nation’s people. The contractor will supply attack helicopters for American use in Afghanistan.

Writing at Forbes, Thor Halvorssen, president of Human Rights Foundation in New York City, argues that the secretive global arms trade makes conflicts—such as the outcries for freedom in Syria—more violent. In some cases, the arms trade even initiates violence. But the Obama administration has said that whether the Russian defense contractor sells to Syria is a nonissue.

Check out Halvorssen’s piece here, which also discusses the involvement of the United Nations in arms dealing (1.5 pages).
