Freedom means … the government provides everything for us?
President Obama has a reputation for rhetorical prowess. But his skill is more for turning words on their head than for eloquence and substance.
At Hoover Institute’s Defining Ideas website, James Huffman argues:
“By [the administration’s] view, liberty consists of positive rights guaranteed by the redistribution of wealth through government programs and subsidies. In other words, liberty depends on the grace and generosity of government.”
President Obama’s notion of liberty is one where we are free to live lives within the constraints set up by the Ruling Political Elite. The best we can aspire, like the campaign’s fictional Julia character, is to use our free time, after we’ve worked hard to give our money to the government, volunteering in a cooperative community garden growing organic kale. Government-defined liberty is kind of antithetical to the notion of liberty, isn’t it?
