Representing the People, Not the Government

Maybe elected leaders should be forced to be more connected to real life

Imagine if more of our legislators—say, even members of the House of Representatives—were part time. Imagine if they had other jobs, other concerns. They might actually represent the people. Right now, they more often just represent the Governing Class.

Brad Hantler, a Republican candidate for the Michigan State House, argues that states that pay their legislators less are often better run than, say, Michigan, which pays its legislators a full-time salary of $71,685 for a light schedule—14 days between now and November.

Hantler could just keep quiet and enjoy a nice big salary should he win, but this guy is principled. He wants to be paid less. Sounds like the type of politician we need.
