A brutal aspect of politics
Of the many things that are wrong with politics—corruption, incumbent advantages, two party system—one of the rarely mentioned hindrances to a functioning republic is the emphasis on the different voting groups.
Will Romney steal some of “the black vote?”
Does Obama own the “gay vote?”
Will Romney’s vice presidential pick gain him the “hispanic vote?”
The middle class vote, the rich vote, the white vote, the union vote, the Catholic vote, the Baptist vote, the retired vote, the deep sea treasure hunter vote.
All of these “votes” need to disappear. How about people just voting for who they thick will be best for the country as a whole and stop worrying about their own immediate personal gratifications? Stop thinking in terms of yourself or whatever segment of society that you most identify with.
Think long term. See beyond the political promises and stunts aimed at keeping or gaining office. Think decades of national prosperity. Put aside pet issues and vote for the freedom to thrive as a people.
If you are honest with yourself, the choices will be pretty clear.
