I learn something new every day
This is exactly why I love the internet and the number one reason I decided to be a blogger (the second reason being that I can barely add). Last night I was just minding my own business, clicking away during the American League Championship Series, when I decided to see what the deal was with Detroit Tigers owner Mike Illitch. As I reach the end of his Wikipedia page, I read this:
The family was presented the key to the City of Detroit by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on February 14, 2008. They are the fifth recipients of this award in the history of the city, the others being actor James Earl Jones, neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis.
Saddam Hussein was awarded the key to Detroit?! What does that do to the value of the city’s key? It kind of cheapens the award when one its five recipients goes onto a career of prodigious genocide. If for any reason Detroit ever wanted to award me the key to their city, I would kindly turn it down.
Apparently Uncle Saddam gave a bunch of money to a Chaldean Christian church in the Motor City back in 1980. His enthusiasm for Christians seems to have soured in later years.
